The R&R Sport Taylors Mistake Rogaine Series is all about getting Christchurch people exploring the Port Hills after work. Getting up above the city breathing some fresh air and checking out the awesome landscapes and views that we are privileged to have on our doorstep.

The great thing about rogaining is that we get to explore every amazing little spot, old gun emplacements, bouldery beaches, fishermens tracks down to mysterious coves, unknown tracks through pockets of native bush, the various peaks and hidden valleys of our local hills, and much much more!

Each week we visit a slightly different part of the Port Hills. Teams, of two or more, are given maps of the area complete with circles indicating the location of checkpoints. Teams visit as many checkpoints as they can in 3 hours. Some teams try to race around them all, while others go instead for the scenic highlights! Rogaining is a sport where everyone from family groups to elite athletes can choose their own challenge to match their abilities and experience.

Checkpoints are described by clues, which vary from the straight-forward to a little cryptic, they may include reference to local plants or landscape features, or something totally random. Rogaining is not just about brute strength, its about cunning and thinking outside the square, problem solving on the run (or walk).

After 3 hours everyone converges back on the finish in a big rush. Spot prizes, general yarning, a bit of feedback to the organisers and you're off back home to bed plotting how you are going to do better next week, reinforcing the tricks of the trade, or just stoked that you're finished! The R&R Sport Taylors Mistake Rogaine Series was founded as a fundraising venture for the NZ Orienteering Team, but is now organised by whichever members of the young local orienteering community that happen to be around with time on their hands and enthusiasm to make it happen. Come along and explore your backyard!
