Race 2 Report 17 September 2007 We had another fine night for Event 2 of the Bivouac Outdoor Night Navigation Series – and a fair bit warmer than the first week. Starting from the Bower Ave entrance to Bottle Lake Forest, the run map concentrated on the dunes east and immediately north of the Landfill site, giving participants a look at areas they probably haven’t visited before. The bike map covered the entire forest with the northern most control attached to the surf club building up at Spencerville. Jo Jagush made amends for some errors in Event 1 to score 150 points more than anyone else on foot, and even with a 40 point penalty for being 2 minutes late, was well clear of the previous week’s winner Greg Campbell. Jocelyn Williams made it two wins in a row and placed 8th overall a good margin ahead of the 2nd placed woman. In the Mountain Bike section, Karren Morris and Jonno Fausch took the honours with an anticlockwise circuit of the whole map, returning with enough time to spare to get the dead-end 10 pointer near the finish – total 780 points. John Fink on the other hand, avoided the dunes altogether and wiggled his way out west and then through the centre and NW of the map amassing all his 810 points by the time he checked in at 101 at the very north end (the aforementioned surf club). He then had 16 minutes to get back to base within the hour. It’s unclear whether he tried to pick up any points on the way back, but any attempts were in vain, and he finished 1 minute and 9 seconds late, incurring a 40 point penalty which dropped him into second place, 10 points behind Karen and Jonno. |
