Rogaine

Rogaining is an endurance team sport based on navigating to checkpoints using a topographical map. Competitors are given a map with all the checkpoints on it and have a defined amount of time to visit as many of these places as possible. They plot their own route and find their way round it carrying food and water to keep their bodies ticking over.

Rogaines generally take place in out of the way places, on high country farms in the bush or in forest, the more scenic the better. That said some of the most popular rogaines have run on the urban fringes in places like Piha, Eastbourne and Taylors Mistake, getting people out there close to town.

Rogaines by their nature cater for all levels of ability, as teams can choose a route and checkpoints appropriate for their skills and fitness. It's a great family sport for this reason. That said people do compete at Rogaines at an elite level (which are run over 24hours), there are biannual World Championships the next to be in Estonia in September 2008.

The BOOHAI is a new rogaining concept, making full use of the weekend by holding competitions over a weekend and encouraging use of an overnight campsite as a great social opportunity for participants.Sweet as!
