Consider yourself boohaied! 3 March 2008 ![]() Ohope Girls Guides high above Mawhai Point Awesome! That was just about the most relaxing event MADeventz has ever organised and we are stoked about all the great feedback we have had. Lots of smiling faces at the finish and also lots of stories about lessons learnt out on the course so that is great. For the record the event was won by '4TC' after overnight leaders 'Wheres The Crayfish Jamie' bombed their route choice on the last day. Falling for the trap of getting stuck way out the back with time running out. In third place were the local house surgeons/ super heros "Stevie's wonders". The highlight of the first day was the amazing views and exploration of Mawhai Point, see some more information about the history of this area, including a whaling station by checking here: http://www.ngatiporou.iwi.nz/tourANAURA.html More references on google to if you try "Mawhai Point". This is certainly an amazing land feature. Lots of teams also reported seeing "Shrek" out on the island, a hermit sheep with his own little paradise. There were plenty of stories around about teams taking on the bush and losing, but by and large a fair chunk of cunning saw most teams scoring well. The second day was very different, the farmland and regenerating scrub exchanged for predominantly pine forest with native pockets. Its always good to provide a variety of terrain that test a wide range of navigation skills. Teams again coped well, particularly BART, the victors on the day. Their weekend started rather inauspiciously with a missed flight leading to a drive from Wellington to Gisborne, but thats a great comeback. Overall teams seemed happy with the control placement and format. CP 70 on Sunday was perhaps a bit "bingo". Some teams got it straight away while others never found it. We try really hard to make placement hard but fair, and use the cryptic clues in the belief that they reward good navigation. If you want to try other events that have similar navigation challenges, two we recommend are TWALK and Cyclic Saga both based around the Canterbury region in the next couple of months. A long way to come, but great events, you will be hooked! So thanks again to those that made this event possible: Sponsor - Thule, Landowners - Hikurangi Forest Farms, Nuhiti Station, DOC and all you people that made the effort to come. Any criticism on event organisation and particularly safety issues is welcome. Thanks again Jamie and the MADeventz crew. |
